The Undertone Movie
We made a film. It won an award. A24 bought it.
When I’ve invested in ideas, I’ve had mixed results. When I’ve invested in the right people, I’ve done pretty well.
My buddy has always had a passion for making films. I first met him when I hired his company to shoot marketing content for my agency clients. But filmmaking was always the real goal—commercials were just a stepping stone. I’ve always loved film too. I love storytelling. I love creating things people enjoy watching. I love experiences. Experience might actually be my favourite word.
I’ve supported Dan’s films since around 2016, and honestly, for a long time it was 90% a passion project. I never imagined it would actually make money. I was an Associate Producer on White Night in 2017 and was blown away by how good it looked on such a tiny budget.
Fast forward to The Undertone. Dan came to me and said, “I love the story, I love the script—and I know you can get your money back on this one.” By then, he’d been in the industry for about a decade, and I trusted him.
We produced the film for about $300,000 CAD—which is nothing in the movie world—but it looked and felt like a big-budget film. We got into Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal, and the audience loved it.
Then there was a bidding war for the rights.
Holy shit.
Long story short, A24 bought it and it will be in 1000 theatres, March 13, 2026. What a ride. Stay tuned…
